Hi, most of you know me as IKU_ZeuS in east and I duel with a Smiter paladin. This is my first guide, and I hope that with it I can motivate some people to try my favorite of all builds in Diablo 2. In this guide I will show how to make a variation of a Smiter paladin that I feel is most useful in PvP. I will talk about where to develop stat points, skill points, where to level, what equipment to use, and how I duel against all 7 classes.
There are many ways to build a Smiter, but this is the way I have found most effective.
Why would you build a Smiter, instead of a Charger, FoHer, Zealot, or Avenger?

1. Smite is an unblockable attack. The only counter to smite is extremely good physical resistance.
2. With charge, zeal, or vengeance you need to put a lot more points in dex, so that your AR is sufficient. Smite does not need AR because it is ITD (ignores targets defense)
3. Although FoH is extremely powerful, it is not worthy against any opponent who uses minions, IE a necromancer, druid, amazon, or assassin.
4. Smite can easily pump out 1000+ damage with the right skills.

Equipment

I know that most elite equipment is quite costly in LOD, so I will write equipment guides for the rich, and for the poor.

However, an elite paladin shield is necessary for the rich or poor. Here are the types of elite paladin shields if you do not yet know their names:
Sacred Targe, Sacred Rondache, Kurast Shield, Zakarum Shield, Vortex shield.
All of these shields have the same average smite damage of 46, except the Sacred Rondache, which has an average damage of 46.5
The differences of these shields are found in the strength requirements, level requirements, and chance to block. I will briefly go over each shields stats.

Sacred Targe: Lvl requirement 47, Strength requirement 86, chance to block 60
Sacred Rondache: Lvl requirement 52, Strength requirement 109, chance to block 58
Kurast Shield: Lvl requirement 55, Strength requirement 124, chance to block 55
Zakarum Shield: Lvl requirement 61, Strength requirement 142, chance to block 52
Vortex Shield: Lvl requirement 66, Strength requirement 148, chance to block 51

As you can see by this, the best shield to use is the Sacred targe, because it has the lowest lvl requirement, lowest strength requirement and highest block

Stats.

To develop stat points effectively, one needs to know what equipment one is going to use, and what the main purpose of the character is for.

Strength: Strength depends on the equipment you use. The highest strength requirement of any item listed above is for Baranars star, which is 153. However, baranar’s star is extremely rare, so lets take a look at the next highest item, which is guardian angel. The requirement is 118. This should be your maxed strength with all your + strength items. Your base strength without items should be around 90-100. You can always add needed strength with charms.

Dexterity: Some people may think that with holy shield, there is no need to pump dex because it will automatically make your blocking 75%…BEHHH! WRONG! With every level you gain, your blocking % will go down. Holy shield will add 35% to your blocking at skill LVL 20, and after that it goes up SUPER SLOWLY. At Skill lvl 38, you’ll only get 38% blocking. That’s 3% with 16 extra skill points. You have to keep your dex high enough so that you can always have 75% blocking. I’m almost certain that you need around 140 dex to have 75% blocking at lvl 75. Only put enough points in dex to keep blocking at 75% because smite needs no AR.

Vitality: Put the rest of your points here

Energy: Base. Smite doesn’t leach, but it only costs 2 mana. I don’t think I have ever run out of mana on my smiter.

Skills

Fanaticism vs. Concentration
Concentration at lvl 20: Damage +345%
Fanaticism at lvl 20: Damage +373%, Attack rating +135%, Attack speed +35%
There should be no debate between these 2 skills

20 points into Smite
20 points into Holy shield
20 points into Fanaticism
20 points into Holy Freeze
1 prayer
1 defiance
1 cleansing
1 vigor
1 might
1 holy fire
1 blessed aim
1 concentration
1 holy bolt
1 charge
1 blessed hammer

That’s 91 skills, which is achievable at level 79 with +skill quests. If you plan on taking your character past 79 then you can lay more points into vigor.

Leveling up

Leveling up is quite hard with a Smiter because he can only dish out single target physical damage.
Levels 1-10: Get yourself a hellforge hammer, found by killing hephasto. Put on might and whack some monsters in act1, 8 player games.
Levels 10-18: Get yourself an act2 combat mercenary, and do sewer runs over and over in 8 person games.
Levels 18-20: Get to act 5, and leach in some baal runs. Its suprising how easy leveling is when other people are doing it for you
Levels 20-25: Kill Normal ancients, 5 levels like BAM!
Levels 25-35: Continue leaching in normal Baal runs
Levels 35-40: Work on your leaching skills in NM baal runs
Levels 40-47: Kill NM ancients, 7 levels like BAM!
Levels 47-99: Continue working on your leaching skills in hell bloody runs
This is how I arrange my hotkeys for duels
F1: Smite (left skill)
F2: Fanaticism
F3: Vigor
F4: Charge (left skill)
F5: Holy shield (right skill)
F6: holy freeze

All auras are of course right skills

The reason why I set the skills up like this is because smite is paired with its aura (fanaticism) and charge is paired with its aura (vigor) By paired I mean you can its both hotkeys at the same time, and have the skill combination you need.

This is my way to set up the hotkeys. It is extremely effective if you have sufficient keyboard skills and know where all the hotkeys are with your eyes closed. If you cannot hit the hotkeys with your eyes closed, just practice, you can learn in about 3 minutes.

Matchups

I’ll start with the easiest matchups and progress to the hardest. Keep in mind this is how I prefer to duel with my Smiter, and is only a reference. There are many other ways to duel, that could be more effective, and the only way to become a good dueler is to get out there and practice, and find which strategies work best for you. Enough with the whining, here we go…

Smiter vs. Charger/Zealot/Avenger Paladins

Gear: Physical
This is probably the simplest duel you are going to encounter. Basically all you do in this duel is put on your holy shield, and holy freeze. When the paladin walks up to you, chill him with HF, then switch to smite/fanat. Highlight him and just hold down your left click, which will have smite on it. I’ll tell you why you will win this duel 99.9% of the time.
Things you have that he doesn’t: An extremely fast attack that is unblockable. 75% blocking and extremely high defense from the holy shield. While he lands at most 3 of 5 swings, you will hit 9-10. Need I say more?

Smiter vs. non-frozen orb Sorceress

Gear: Elemental
I am almost certain that I can cook dinner, do my schoolwork, talk on the phone, and kill any non-frozen orb sorces at the same time. This is how this duel works. Pop on your holy shield, then hotkey charge/vigor.
As soon as you can get your mouse over the sorc, just hold down on it. You’ll charge at her at rapid speed. As soon as you can get her to stop to cast at you, immediately switch to smite/fanat, and you’ll have a dead sorc. If you duel the sorc a couple times in a row, she might THINK she is getting smarter, and just stand still while spamming nova. This is really funny. While shes sitting there wasting her mana, put on fanaticism and charge, and charge in once. After you hit her quickly switch to smite, your smite will kill her a lot faster then her nova will kill you. If she’s wearing energy shield this is even funnier because with one smite, all her mana is gone, and her only possibility is to whack you with her wand/orb/staff.

Smiter vs. melee Assassin

Gear: Physical
This is a joke. Put holy shield on, and then switch to smite/fanat. Wait for the assassin to walk up to you. When she walks up to you, hold down your smite on her and watch her die. I haven’t tested exclusively yet, but I think tying your shoes might be a little harder.

Smiter vs. Poison Necromancer

Gear: Elemental
This is another, “Holy shield, smite/fanat, hold down your smite key” duel. You will never lose this duel, unless you just sit there and let him kill you.

Smiter vs. Elemental Amazon

Gear: Elemental
Same as dueling a poison necro, or melee assassin. You will never lose this duel.

Smiter vs. Dragon flight Assassin

Gear: Physical
Put your holy shield on, and then switch to smite/fanaticism. With the proper gear you can easily take 1 dragon flight. Let her dragon flight you, and as soon as she lands smite the **** out of her. This is another simple duel.

Smiter vs. Trap Assassin

Gear: Elemental
This is another simple duel. Start by putting on your holy shield, and then switch to vigor/charge. Spiral around the Assassin avoiding her sentries, coming closer to her with each revolution. When you see her, you know she can see you. Be spontaneous, and charge in on her at any random time. Your charge should give her a small stun, giving you enough time to switch to smite/fanat and end her in the old fashion whack-an-assassin way. You should be able to kill her before her traps do any serious, if any damage.

Smiter vs. Bear Druid

Pop on your holy shield, and then put on holy freeze. Chill the druid then immediately switch to smite/fanat. Rush him and unload a fury of smites. If the druid has some good physical equipment this could take a while.

Smiter vs. Spirit of barbs Druid

Gear: Physical
Pop on your holy shield then switch to holy freeze. Chill the druid, then switch to smite/fanat and run over and kill his spirit of barbs. Once this is dead, proceed to make cakework of the druid.

Smiter vs. Thorns Paladin

Gear: Physical
This is basically a battle of who has more life. I really haven’t experienced any duels against someone who has a high level thorns, but I have faced some people with lvl 25 and less thorns. What you do is just simply put your holy shield on, then walk up and smite them. This is basically a battle of who has more life. I’m pretty sure this would kill you if they had a high level thorns and good physical resists, so its probably not the best method. The only reason I was able to kill these thornadins was because they were extremely inexperienced and probably PVM builds. The only other way I can figure killing a high level thornadin is by putting on a bow and shooting him a few times. I’m sure if you had access to a unique ballista you could make quick work of the thornadin.

Smiter vs. Mind Blast Assassin

Gear: As much –magic damage as possible
Put your holy shield on then switch to charge/vigor. Highlight the assassin and start charging. The Assassin will most likely get a mind blast lock on you, and if she doesn’t just smite her and kill her. But if she does get a lock on you, just continue holding down on the charge button. Her mana supply will exhaust before your life does, and when she’s out of mana its time for you to make the kill. Switch to smite/fanat and just run up and kill her.

Smiter vs. Iron Maiden Bone Spirit Necromancer

Gear: Half Physical
This is much like the duel against the thorns paladin, except multiply the difficulty a couple hundred times. Spiral around the necromancer coming closer with each revolution. Make sure you have charge and vigor on. If you can manage to get a charge off without him hitting you with iron maiden then your set, just get a charge off then smite away. If you happen to get hit with iron maiden, he’ll start spamming you with bone spirits. Do your best to avoid the BS. Whatever you do, DO NOT CHARGE. He’ll throw up a bonewall and the iron maiden will make mincemeat out of your life. If you can manage to get right next to him, switch to fanat/smite quickly, and just smite him. I think with your physical gear that his life will drain a lot faster then yours even with iron maiden on. The main concern with this duel is avoiding the bonespirits.

Smiter vs. FoH Paladin

Gear: Elemental
This is a tough duel if your opponent knows what he’s doing. Most likely he has a high level holy freeze, and he’ll try to chill you as quickly as possible. Try to end this duel as quick as you can. Put on vigor and charge, and charge him before you get chilled. IMMEDIATELY switch to smite/fanat at the end of the charge, and try to get a smite lock on him. If you get chilled, you’re basically out of luck. All you can do is just put charge and vigor on and try to get close to him. If you can manage to get close you can try to get a few smites off. The main concern in this duel is to strike first.

Smiter vs. Berserker Barbarian

Gear: As much –Magic damage as possible
I have only dueled one pure berserker and we came out about 50/50. What you try to do in this duel, is chill him with holy freeze, then put on fanat/smite, and smite away. The problem with this is that the barb will most likely have tons of life, so it will take a lot of hits to kill him. But one strike from his berserk will kill you no matter what.

Smiter vs. Bowazon

Gear: Physical

This is the first of the 3 hardest duels. This also depends on the equipment that the zon has. If she has the unique ballista, windforce, or any cruel bow with a lot of pierce, your gonna have a lot of problems. First put on charge/vigor. I like to start off this duel by spiraling around the zon, switching direction occasionally to make her waste some mana with multi shot. If you can get the zon on screen, you MUST charge ASAP. When your charge is almost finished switch to smite/fanat and try to get a smite off. If you can the amazon will be in smite-lock and she will be dead. If the zon runs when she sees you charge you have to proceed to work your hotkeys. Start off with charge and vigor. Click on the zon with charge and watch her run. About 1 millisecond before your charge is about to hit switch to fanaticism. If your fast enough the charge should connect, then you simply switch to smite and hit the stunned zon. If your charge isn’t working too well then put on smite and vigor and chase her. She’ll think your just running normally and shell try to fire an arrow. Now one of three things will happen. 1 is the arrow will hit you, and she’ll probably hit you with a few more guided arrows and you’ll be dead. 2 is that you’ll block the arrow and she’ll fire a few more Guided arrows and your dead. 3 is that the arrow wont hit you altogether (keep in mind this is based on luck) and you can just continue running at her and get her in a smite lock, and she’s dead. This is probably the hardest duel if the zon is skilled and has good equipment.

Smiter vs. Frozen orb Sorceress

Gear: Elemental
If you have two raven frosts and snowclash you won’t die. But if you don’t you have to be careful. Put on vigor and charge and try to lock onto the sorc. If you can then just keep on chasing her, until she stops to cast a spell and you charge MIGHT connect. If it does then switch to fanat/smite and kill her. If your charge doesn’t connect then keep on repeating the process. This duel could be impossible if the sorc is really good at teleporting, and not just a “1.08 I’m a sorc because I can get to level 99 sorc”

Smiter vs. Whirlwind Barbarian

Gear: Physical
I have a slightly unorthodox way of fighting whirlwind barbs. If you don’t like my style don’t use it, no one is making you. First thing is to put your holy shield on. Then switch to holy freeze. Once the barb is chilled push the “r” key on your keyboard. The reason for this is that so you walk instead of run. The problem with running is that if the barb connects a WW as your running it will hit you 90% of the time. This is because when your running your defense drops to zero, and your blocking decreases. So now you’re walking and the barb is cold. Wait for the barb to some to you, keeping your mouse on him the whole time. Make sure you have fanat/smite on and as he’s about to start his whirlwind, hold down the shift key with your left hand and hold down the left click on the barb. I call this the shift-smite. What this does is makes you stand still while the barb whirlwinds through you. If your defense is high enough and your blocking is 75% the barb will have a hard time striking you. However his WW will be slow, and during it you will get a bunch of smites off. If all goes well the barb will just keep on Whirling as you stand there and take it like a man, while smiting the hell out of him. If the barb decides he wants you to come to him, that’s good and fine because you have walk on, and it will still be hard to WW you. Continue with the shift-smiting until the barb is dead. The main concern during this duel is to keep the barb chilled. The reason behind him being chilled is that his WW takes longer to complete, letting you get more hits in during it.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed my guide and I hope you try out what I think is the most fun character in the game.
